BIOGRAPHY
Born in Washington D.C. in 1941, Allan Baillie's artistic journey began at an early age. In the 1960s, he studied Fine Art at Virginia Commonwealth University, and attended a summer program at the Academia di Belle Arti in Rome, Italy. Serving in the US Army from 1967 to 1969, Baillie further honed his craft through studies with Grace Hartigan at the Maryland Institute, where he earned an MFA in painting in 1971. A pivotal moment occurred that year when he participated in a master class with Diane Arbus in New York City.
In the subsequent years, Baillie's evolution as an artist saw the establishment of a painting studio on the Bowery in NYC from '71 to '75 and a professional photo studio from 1975 to 1992. In 2006, he collaborated on a book of photos with poetry titled "Lotus" alongside Kaz Tanahashi. In 2010, Baillie became an Artist in Residence at the Dune Shack in Provincetown, MA.
Baillie divides his time between the United States and San Miguel de Allende, Mexico, where he has been a part-time resident since 2019. His work has garnered international recognition and is held in private collections worldwide.
Allan Baillie is represented by The Photography Gallery in San Miguel de Allende.
